MiCA is raising the bar for crypto compliance - and the LEI is part of It

As the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) enters its final implementation phase, crypto businesses are preparing for a more transparent and harmonised regulatory landscape.

While much of the attention has focused on CASP authorisations and governance requirements, another important element is becoming increasingly relevant: the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI).

Since 23 December 2025, a valid LEI has been required in crypto-asset white papers under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2025/421. As MiCA reporting becomes more standardised and digital, the LEI provides a globally recognised way to identify legal entities across regulatory filings and financial markets.

Why the LEI matters

An active LEI helps organisations:

  • Meet MiCA reporting requirements
  • Improve transparency and entity identification
  • Simplify KYB, AML and onboarding processes
  • Reduce operational and reporting risk
  • Build trust with regulators, financial institutions and counterparties

It's also important to remember that an LEI must remain ACTIVE and in an ISSUED status. A lapsed LEI is publicly visible in the Global LEI Index and can create unnecessary delays during regulatory submissions or customer onboarding.

A growing opportunity for partnerships

As MiCA comes into force, we're seeing increasing interest from crypto platforms, fintechs, exchanges, corporate service providers and compliance partners looking for efficient ways to manage LEIs for their customers.

At NordLEI, we help organisations streamline the entire LEI lifecycle - from issuance and renewals to portfolio management - making it easy to integrate LEI services into existing customer journeys.

Whether you're preparing for MiCA compliance or looking to offer LEI services as part of your own platform, we'd be happy to discuss how we can support your business and your clients.
